On this site I primarily attempt to address spiritual growth, our relationship to God, service to our fellow man and our responsibility to the people God puts in our path.
My basic premise is that to be an effective force within our sphere of influence, we must first walk the walk; that is to say our relationship with Jesus Christ must be such that people will see something in us that appeals to them. We need to meet, as we are enabled, the needs of those people where they are. They must know, by our actions, that we are people of integrity who care about them and other people with whom we interact.
Some of what is shared here, challenges us to allow the foundational truths of the early church—that is loving God above all else and to love others more than we love ourselves—to permeate our daily existence. Other articles attempt to address contemporary life issues especially as they relate to our evangelical churches individually and the church as described in the New Testament as a whole.
I have also recorded some thoughts and provided links to places that, although perhaps of no particular eternal profundity, I nevertheless find interesting, informative, amusing or to have some other (subjective and perhaps marginally) redeeming value. Everything doesn't have to be seriously serious does it? — I mean, seriously…
Hopefully, as you read these pages, you will be able to glean the occasional nugget that you can use in your walk with Jesus. Sometimes I share something that has worked for me or someone else in the hope that someone else might benefit from it. However, you will not always find a clear cut answer here. Solomon is not available for consultation at this time.
This was never intended to be a "Living The Christian Life for Dummies" site where you plug in a question and out pops an answer. My prayer is that as you ponder some of the questions with me, the Holy Spirit will reveal the answer as it relates to your particular situation. Listen for the still small voice of God. His quiet counsel is able to drown out the noisy, unsolicited and sometimes unsound advice from those of us who attempt to share what we understand—at the moment—to be truth.
There is only one Author's collection of written words that I take at face value. That is the Holy Word of God and it is the standard by which every other opinion and conclusion must be measured. If what I or anyone else says is contradictory to what God spoke through his messengers and has preserved for us through the ages, it is simply wrong.
FYI: If you do want to discuss any of this, the easiest way to contact me is to use the contact form on my blog. It would be easy to start a discussion about some of these articles on my blog.
Not long ago that very question inspired me to try to address it for myself.
There are several reasons that come to mind.
Max Lucado, in The Write Stuff puts it succinctly when he says, "Make every word earn its place on the page. Sentences can be like just-caught fish, spunky today and stinky tomorrow. Re-read until you’ve thrown out all the stinkers."
It is similar to the admonition from photographer Ken Rockwell who, speaking of composition, says that we should ask ourselves, "…what about the photo makes it worthwhile for anyone else to spend the time examining? … there's a delete button, use it. Less is more; the less in the frame the stronger the image. Simplicity is a strong virtue."
I am increasingly aware of my penchant for verbosity. It's not a desirable trait in anyone, and for a wannabe writer, it's inexcusable. I don't want to waste your time.
I continue to re-read and re-write here and on my blog but I have a long way to go. Bear with me if you can. I am open to your suggestions and criticism. I have a standing offer to any proofreader who wants to offer his or her services to make these sites better. And I will pay you what I pay myself…
These are not new heretofore unpublished thoughts. This late into the game it's hard to imagine having concepts and ideas that are not built on the wisdom of the ages. So why continue to write?
The Gospel is presented from different perspectives by different men; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to say nothing of Paul and other writers of the New Testament. People relate to the message in different ways.
However, the need for variety certainly cannot explain all the words that have been written.
I think it's mostly because writers just can't stop… I can't stop… so maybe I am a writer of sorts after all.
